While the morning skies dropped continued eyelets of rain, the evening graduating ceremonies of Salem High School were held under blue skies. Parents, friends, and family members filled the Salem High School football bleachers to celebrate the acknowledgements of and achievements of the graduating seniors.
The procession of graduates entered the stadium from both ends of the football field. Two by two they walked the quarter mile track until they reached their assigned seating upon the football field. Students who have sat next to each other for most of their education years, now sat once again aside for the last time, as they waited for their name to be called for them to receive their High School Diploma.
The graduating seniors of SHS 2013 graduating class had amassed in excess of $6,583,592 in scholarships and grants. Local community and private scholarships totaled: $ 253,000 and an additional sum of scholarship monies of $51,500 was awarded to the SHS class of 2013.
Speech after speech spoke of “paying it forward” and words of “self discovery.” Salem school superintendent, Dr. Michael W. Delahanty, challenged the graduates to plan their future. “You cannot predict but you can plan” stated Dr. Delahanty.
