Replacing Sounds of Silence with Musical Notes at Rodgers Memorial Library
June 10, 2016
by Kaylee Murphy
Four different bands played on the beautiful sunny day outside at Rodgers Memorial Library. This is the library’s seventh year at its new building. The library has been planning this event for about eight months. They hope to make it an annual event, which would happen the first weekend in June during their birthday month. Digital Credit Union was a huge sponsor of the event. Lyx was there selling ice cream and cold drinks. There were also burgers and hot dogs for sale.
The first performer was family entertainer Steve Blunt; he played songs that made the kids laugh, dance and sing along. They even played along with shaker eggs and jingle bells. Blunt played various instruments such as the ukulele and a jimbay, a hand drum originating in western Africa. He’s been singing for 18 years, mainly around the southern New Hampshire area.
Morgan Vigroux and the House Band for Regional Bedford Idol Show played jazz and Broadway classics such as “New York, New York” and “All That Jazz.” She gave an impressive set of vocals. Vigroux just finished up her freshman year at Pinkerton Academy. She played Belle in the school’s play “Beauty and the Beast.” She also won the Bedford Idol Competition. This summer she is going to Orlando for about two weeks for Miss Teen USA training.
The Reunion Trio played songs of the ‘50s through the ‘70s and the band Shannachie played Irish music. The four singers/bands were all fantastic, and people of all ages enjoyed the variety of music on the beautiful, sunny Saturday afternoon.
The library has a lot of great programs this summer such as the Teen Summer Reading Program for ages 11-17 or entering sixth grade and up. Registration begins on June 13 and the program runs from June 27 through August 6. Some of their events include laser tag, Chocolate Olympics, Teen Minigolf, and Water Balloon Mayhem, just to name a few.
There are other programs as well. There will be three events pertaining to healthy eating in June. The first being on the 13th at 7 p.m., Betsy Williams, herbal cookbook author, will discuss growing and using herbs. Along with healthy eating, the library also offers exercise and stress reduction programs. For more information about programs and events visit rmlnh.org or call 886-6030.
