The first major community blood drive of the year was held at Presentation of Mary Academy on Saturday, Jan. 2.  Hosted at PMA, it was sponsored by Dunkin Donuts, supported by radio station WZID, and with concierge services for the donors from the Knights of Columbus.

Donors arriving were greeted by the Knights and assisted thought the intake process as PMA student volunteers offered coffee, donuts and other snacks.  WZID radio station played in the school’s cafeteria with the on-air folks inviting their listeners to come to PMA and give the gift of life.

Donors went to the gymnasium to give blood and then returned to the cafeteria for more snacks and beverages.  While this was going on the PMA cheer team was demonstrating its routines and stunts.  Red Cross staff hustled throughout the building making sure every donor was well taken care of.

Red Cross Chief Executive Officer Maria Devlin spoke with the HLN, who wanted to be sure everyone knew how wonderful today’s sponsors, Dunkin Donuts, were and their sponsorship went beyond the gift cards that the donors received and how important the gift of blood is important to our society and especially to those in life-threatening situations.  Saturday’s drive at the academy collected 116 units of blood.

Sister Maria Rosa, principal of the academy, was excited to be able to host this event and to give back to the community.

The winter months are especially difficult times.  With demand up and the supply down, these drives are especially important for the Red Cross and those they help.
