Campbell Soccer Defies Trinity and the Elements Earning D3 Victory

November 9, 2018

After 16 regular season games and a hard-fought postseason-ending contest, it all came down to penalty kicks. The Campbell Cougars edged past the Trinity Pioneers on a blustery Saturday that culminated in two overtimes and a 3-to-2 penalty kick shootout. Both teams fought the elements at Southern New Hampshire University as strong rain and wind gusts gave the players even more to contend with than their closely matched rivals.

Trinity may have handed Campbell its only defeat of the regular season on Oct. 18, but the Cougars took the ultimate prize as they captured the Division III soccer championship against the Pioneers.

The victory was realized by the slimmest of margins as Campbell goalkeeper Brendan Douglas made the game-winning save by stopping the Pioneers’ final penalty kick attempt. This narrow, hard-fought Division III loss was Trinity’s only defeat this season.
